Workout for smaller back muscles?

You know how certain workouts/trainers target the smaller muscles in arms with lighter weights -- like Tracy Anderson, Ellen in her {Skinny Sculpt}5808^/{Slim Sculpt}5925^, and Swylvia in the bonus arms workout of her latest DVD ... well is there any such thing as workouts that target 'smaller' back muscles??

Hi,  I suggest considering adding one or two Pliates videos to  your
mix.  Also, the Classical Stretch,  not yet sold by Collage but
we hope in the future,  really targets opening and strengthening
the upper back.  Is that your pet skunk?

Thanks Alice Kathleen ... good suggestion about pilates.  I wish he was my pet skunk; he's so adorable ;)  My hubby came across the picture and we adopted it for Collage ...

I'm curious, why would you want to target the "smaller" back muscles?  As opposed to working the back as a whole along with the opposing muscles in the abs and butt?

(I'm having trouble visualizing these smaller back muscles, where are they?  How you would isolate them...and why you would want to.)

I currently work out my back muscles using heavy weights but was curious if there was some other set of muscles I might be overlooking that would be targetted with another type of exercise ...

The "superman" and variations would your back differently than weights.  According to back expert Stuart McGill and others I've read, it is an excellent exercise for back health.  (the one laying on your tummy and raising your legs....or arms and chest off the ground...or variations, one arm and one leg etc.)

Hi,  I did the Classical Stretch "Core Workout" video last week,
and she really focuses on the upper and mid back,  like no
other video.  Alas,  Collage does not YET carry the Classical
Stretch videos, and they are quite expensive.  As I recall, that
one was about 40 bucks.  But again,  for upper back, terrific
and worth the money.   Wish Collage would carry them.

Reverse back extensions nice and slowly really target your lower back muscles. When you start to get better then start doing them holding onto a plate. I also do light deadlifts and goodmornings. I suggest you look those up on yourtube or google for proper form.
