When do you workout

After severe health problems and major weight gain, I am able to start getting in the swing again.  I am wondering if working out at night will help me sleep better?

I don't get home from work until 6:00.  I would love to get up early but I still sleep terrible and I know I don't get enough rest so that option is out.

I have several walking tapes and am starting out slow like I should.

Thanks for your answers and help.

I think walking workouts are a great idea.   What I've been doing is a mile walk in the AM (I do include marching around my kitchen making breakfast and lunch as part of the mile!) It will take you no more than 10-16 minutes.  Then I finish it up when I get home.   Try to do a total of at least 3 miles.  Don't start too late though. It will help with your sleep, similar to lap swimming.

I workout in the morning, because it's harder to fit in at night. However, I am home all day, so I work out around 8 a.m. I'm not sure I could do it at 5 or 6!
I have worked out in the evening, and slept okay. The only issue is drinking lots of water - you might have to get up in the middle of the night!

Dee, The best time of day to workout is whatever time works for you. For some it is best to get up early so the rest of their daily schedule doesn't sidetrack them. For others, it's right after work and still some can't make it happen until after dinner. Try the evenings and see how you feel. Don't wait too late though, you'll want to leave enough time to 'calm' down before bed.  ...unless you are doing a relaxing stretch or yoga
    workout that day.

Yep, exactly! I'm not a morning person so have to work out in the evening. If possible, I try to work out after work but before dinner but that may not be possible for you if you don't get in until 6:00 (you don't want to work out when you're hungry). You may have no choice but to do your workout after dinner's digested. If that's the case - as mentioned - try to finish workout with a little wind down time before bed. I suspect this will greatly help your sleep; let us know how it goes! And congrats about getting back into the routine :)

Hi Dee,  so glad you are with us.   I suggest sneaking a few minutes throughout the
day as well as a dedicated 30 min workout.   If you work in an office,  keep some light
hand weights or a dynaband at your desk, and use your break times as YOUR time to
do arm work!   Also,  those simple things like taking the stairs,  walking during lunch,
walking the dog in the morning,   etc,  they do all add up.   It's kind of fun to see how
much time you can find to move, stretch,  do a few triceps kickbacks during the day.
That way,  you are ahead of the game.  When you come home, you can then do
your videos.   I also suggest variety, try a yoga or Pilates video too,  just for fun.  (because
the bottom line is,  working out IS fun!)  Please post soon and let us know how you are
    doing.   Best,  AK

I work out in the evening after work, usually between 5:30 and 6:30pm. I find it helps relieve the stress from work, it helps stunt my evening munchy tendencies, and it helps me actually sleep better, and I am out by 9-9:30pm. On the weekends I like to workout in the morning bfore all kinds of other stuff get in the way, that's most helpful for me then, as I can just have a fun weekend without worrying about it because it's already done.

I generally follow a routine similar to Redcat's. During the work week, I often look forward to a workout as an afternoon or early evening treat...and/but now that football season's revving up again, you can bet I'll get my Saturday and Sunday sessions in before kickoff!

I feel lucky and very thankful that I can be more flexible (no pun intended!) with my workout schedule than many who have to do it at a certain time because it's the one-and-only chance in a given day. To those who do have a choice, I recommend trying to figure out at which times you'd enjoy it most--that in itself can be a great motivator.

    Dee, rock on!

If you are just getting back to exercising and don't like the pre-work a.m. workout, you need to pack a change of clothes and drive yourself directly to a gym and have their rep set you up with beginner routines and a weekly regimen/daily program or check out their class schedule. That way, no excuses to get the job done.
On the weekends, try setting your alarm clock for some extra zzzz's and get up at 8 to work out at home no later than 9 am. This will get you in the routine of trying morning workouts with good dvds.
My point is, there has been many studies that consistently show the most benefit from exercise is when it is done first in the morning. Your brain has been turned on to make you more successful at your job duties, you will start sleeping better, you  will  lessen cravings (eat healthy after your workout!), even weight loss has been more successful with early exercise.
If you insist that the only way for you is just home dvd's, as you drive home, eat an apple, change immediately into your workout gear, get your water and TURN ON YOUR VIDEO!!
Good luck and G-d Bless! I'm rooting for you!!

I usually workout in the morning, but you should exercise when it is convenient for you.  I do like Leslie Sansone.  Anyway, you take care of you.

I do workout everyday because regular exercise is best for physical fitness and health. I do workout daily in the morning time because morning time is best to do workout.
