How to get a better butt?

Seems my workouts only cause my butt to protrude more, like it's building up muscle, yet the fat is still laying on top (alone with my cellulite!).  I'd rather my butt be a little flatter, smaller, and less flabby.  What do I need to do?!

Thx!

Well, years ago when I was thin enough not to care what size butt I had, I did the 'Thin Thighs in 30 days' routine. Anyone else remember that book? (one of those cheapy booklet types) Basically a set of exercises focusing on thighs and legs, plus a regular plan for walking, building up to three miles a day. I just wanted the fitness aspect from it, but I have to say that my butt got smaller after I did the workout for a while. Hmmm ... . Maybe I should take it up again.

well....... I know its Genes for sure my Grandma has a Jo Lo butt, sister and me. What helps me.... I Run , which helps alot!!!  I also do squats, lunges and donkey kicks to keep from being jiggly, if you know what I mean. I like to do high reps for my lowerbody. I still feel like I have a big butt but at least it toned!!

I even watch my diet!!! Diet is very important also, but theres so much I can do, Blame it on the Genes!!! Be proud of your butt.... I know its hard also finding pants cause the waist is so big. So.... Genetics,Check your diet,Do cardio such as Running or Walking and High reps for your lowerbody,If your a Pear Shape like me, Lift heavy weights for your upperbody to make you more proportion. HTH!

My buttocks have been lifted and are tighter after doing many lunges over the past years, squats and floor toning- like donkey kicks or back kicks (standing leg work as well) but also using ankle weights and the tubing for donkey kicks and other leg exercises has helped. Cursty lunges really works deep in the glutes.

I have this book! The 3 miles walking probably is what helps the most!

I agree with more cardio to get rid of the layer of fat. Some people say barre and {Callanetics}7951^ work helps tone and shrink too.

Thanks, all!  I think what I really need is more time, discipline, and energy!!

I get in a 30-min (approx) DVD workout daily (mostly intermediate level) in the morning, along with 10-15 min walk in the afternoon with my dog.  I can't see how I can fit in any more with 3 kids, etc., combined w/my lack of energy as the day wears on.  DANG!  I'm thinking I need to discipline myself to eat less...if even to just cut out desserts...but I lack the discipline.  And my energy level stinks -- I sit down on the couch and fall asleep sitting up -- but I am trying to figure that one out with my doctor.

Any jogging-type DVDs that are about 30 mins long?  I already have Leslie Sansone's walk and jog.  I tend to use it on "easy" days.

    THANKS!

When I was in my 20's I started with my stationary bike doing 30 minute workouts at home at night, and that shrank my butt.  Now one of my favorites is the floor exercises using the exertubes in {Strength & Core Fusion}7969^.

I want to add that step has also made a major difference. Doing high imact step cardio, and also toning on the step with or without weights where you squat off the step or do lunges on or off the step.

yeah, see, that's what I'm talking about.  Biking and Step is one of those workouts that seems to strengthen my butt muscles, making my butt stick out, but doesn't really do anything to the top layer of flab.  Does that make sense?

    THX!

The exercise bike flattened my behind, and I actually got comments about that.  Maybe watching your diet is the way to go.

    Michele-

Have you considered taking a 20 minute nap in the afternoon?  With all that you're doing, of course you are losing your energy.

Thanks, Carol, for thinking outside the exercise box!  Yes, I have tried that.  Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me.  I have done it, but I often wake more cranky and just as tired. Sometimes it has helped me get through the rest of the day, but not in a rejuvenated way.  I'd have to do it when my toddler naps which is when I get all my domestic stuff done.  It seems like it's my 2nd most energetic time of the day, next to first thing in the morning.   Thanks for the idea!

I have tried many things...I used to run 4 miles every day, then I did a lot of weights, now I do cardio & weights...and I'll tell you what...I wear a size 3 and STILL have that flab and a little bit of cellulite on my butt and upper legs...I think it's hereditary unfortunately and I have stopped trying to get rid of it and just focus on my best features in stead. =)

    Hey Michele,
Have you tried Iron or B12 supplements?  I'm anemic and I have to take both or I'm totally wiped out. You can get B12 in drops at the grocery but most women have to be more careful with the type of Iron they take.  Those are 2 things your doctor will probably check when he/she pricks your finger.
As far as the glute exerciese go...Round ness is not that bad, just ask my BF, he's a butt man.  I was fixated on it for a long time.  I'd walk by a glass window and that's all I'd see.  I went on a cardio binge and lost a lot of weight and my butt shrank a little, but I got the never ending cold too.  I was down to like a size 2-3 (I'm 5.5) and the only curve left on me was in the rear, but that was not as round as once was.  I lost belly and boobs, go figure!! I was just flat everywhere. So now what I do is try to maintain the saddle bag area (outher hip/thigh tringle) and put the plump where it belongs, up higher. This is what most good glute exercises will do.

LOL...your pic doesn't look like you'd have any flab!!

I like your line of thinking!  I decided to spend my 40s being less body conscious...I'm slowly getting there, and it helps to have support like the people on this list!

    thx!

Oh, how maddening to work so hard and lose weight in other places than intended!

Yes, my iron and B-12 checked out w/i normal limits (that was in Oct...perhaps they've decreased since then).  Blood work seems to indicate less obvious things that might be impacting my energy...such as magnesium and various amino acids.

Thanks for your support. I really appreciate it!

As mentioned by others, aerobics will burn the fat (but it won't necessarily come off your butt first). And lower-body muscle toning will "tighten" the buttock muscles which should make your buttock look better.

I have noticed a difference since I started doing  the Ripped series with all those lunges and squats and now Kettlebells and Squeeze. My butt seems to slim down from the side in.
