P90X VS. TOUGHIES LIKE CATHE

Im very intrigued by all the talk about P90X.  I wonder if any video junkies familiar with the likes of Cathe have any idea how the P90 workouts compare.   I've tried to find video clips on you tube but I can't seem to find any.  Does P90X exceed the tough workouts we get from the toughest instructors such as some of those available on this site?

In a word, NOPE.  I have P90X and have done all the workouts, although I didn't last long on it as a rotation.  The difference that P90X has is that it's a complete system (although Cathe also has a system -- STS).  It's VERY upper body focused, with heavy weight maxing to failure, and LOTS of pull-ups and push up variations.  There was very little fun factor for me, but several of the workouts are pretty hardcore (Core Synergistics, Plyo X, Chest & Back).  I still use Ab Ripper X as one of my favourite add-ons for advanced core work.  IMO Cathe has workouts just as advanced, and even more advanced, than these ones -- but with better music, production, and FUN FACTOR.
I did get and LOVE Chalean Extreme as a total program, but still added in my own cardio.  Much more fun and just as effective.
    Again, just my opinion :)

Thanks Sam,  I'm so glad to hear that.  One of the guys I work for has been doing p90x.  Not having done p90x, I wasnt sure I could safely bet on this but I challenged him to try one of my Cathe videos.  My husband and I both did the butts and gutts video before going on a ski trip and he couldnt finish it the first couple times he tried it.  I thought I might let him try that one.  What do you think, will it KICK HIS BUTT?   If he's doing a lot of upper body, this may just accomplish what I was hoping for. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have done the p90x system and i enjoyed it.  I liked Tony Horton as an instructor.  I looked forward to the strength routines.  plyo is waayy tough but what a calorie burner.  I incorporate the strength into my current rotation.  As sam said, it is mostly core/upper body strength (which gives you awesome back/chest/shoulders and arms). I felt it lacked in the lower body aspect even though there is a legs dvd (def not even as intense as Cathe).  most women want to focus on the legs and butts.  just tried her {butts and guts}7711^ and holy burn!!!  waiting for gym style {legs}7505^!

P90X is a little unique in that you can pick your own # of reps. Cathe's workouts can be tougher...but P90X has been giving men and women some awesome results over the years, so there must be some magic in the system that's tried and true.

and for Chalene and CLX... something about Chalene gives the workouts a fun factor and she just seems to motivate you to WANT to workout and do your best everyday. For some reason Cathe doesn't give off the same motivation for me.

I thought I'd chime in here since I've done CLX and P90X and I'm currently doing STS. IMO they're all really great programs that do slightly different things.

CLX is a complete program with weight lifting and cardio workouts. CLX builds muscle. It really defines your body. It uses heavy weights to get results. You lift to reach failure. It is a set program that progress through three cycles. It has a high fun factor. It was straight forward, easy to follow, and I loved it from beginning to end. Chalene's personality is very supportive. The programs are shorter and easy to fit in busy schedules.

P90X is a complete system with weight lifting and cardio workouts. P90X is more flexible. You can pick your reps and your rotation. There are multiple rotations. It can really rip you out do to the plyo, push ups, and pull ups especalily if you do the doubles rotation, which is the one I did. It has you doing two cardio programs a day during certain phases. It can also really build you up. I like Tony and his cheese ball antics, but others find him a little annoying. The programs are longer than the CLX programs. One note: I did not do the Yoga X. I'm an intermedate to advanced yogini so I did my own personal yoga practice.

STS has weight lifting workouts only. You are responsible for your own cardio. The rest periods in the STS workouts are carefully timed for each cycle so there is no wasted time. Sometimes things feel a little rushed, but I find with some planning and set up ahead of time it runs smoothly. The workouts are also carefully constructed with set goals in mind. STS is very comprehensive and tough. I've noticed steady increases in strength and endurance along with a drop in body fat and leaner muscle mass.

BlueGirl - nice breakdown. I've been looking at STS Strength but also CLX. I have been afraid of CLX because of the Hollywood hype promotions. If I spend money, I want a safe, thorough, effective workout. But your comments and others, like Sam, make me think that maybe I should start with CLX, although I am a big Cathe fan and trust her workouts. CLX does sound impressive.

Thanks for taking the time to post that great info.

flower child - CLX is a great place to start. One thing I liked about it was that it creates a solid muscular foundation.

Also, I forgot to mention that STS Strength requires some additional prep time outside of the workouts in the form of the One Rep Max calculations and the work sheets for each workout. You don't have to your One Rep Max calculations but if you don't then you might not select the right weight for the excercise and it's harder to get the strength gains.

Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely loving STS right now but I'm glad I did CLX.

In fact, my Husband is doing CLX in the evenings. He likes it.

One Tip for those doing the STS system, I noticed that Cathe had free podcasts, Q&A type stuff, with demos up on iTunes: just seach for Cathe (or CatheTV)

Thanks for explaining each one! My husband has PX90 (hasn't done it yet), so maybe I will try it. Sorry I don't get Cathe, but to each her own.
